Our vision for the Sheffield City Region
We want the Sheffield City Region to make a greater contribution to the UK economy by having a local economy less dependent on the public sector, by providing conditions for businesses to grow and by giving the nation its prime centre for advanced manufacturing and materials and low carbon industries.
We will offer people a great place in which to work, invest and live in, visit and study.
How will we achieve this?
Through research by our universities, and confirmed by the recent Economic Assessment, the LEP has identified the sectors with the greatest potential to drive productivity growth in the City Region:
- Advanced manufacturing activities such as research and development, product design, bespoke manufacturing, and the provision of related services
- Low carbon industries (particularly the opportunities for our manufacturing sector)
- Creative and Digital
- Healthcare (including medical technologies)
In addition, there are other sectors that are of importance to job creation:
- Aviation
- Tourism
- Retail
- Construction
- Culture, leisure and sport
Professional, financial and business services will provide the support for the growth of these targeted sectors.
Our six priority ‘workstreams’
In order to drive growth in the key sectors listed above, the LEP is focussing on six priority workstreams:
1. Establishing a national growth hub for advanced manufacturing and materials.
2. Delivering a new, employer-led approach to improving workforce skills.
3. Improving support for strategically important companies and potential inward investors.
4. Setting up a private sector-led business support service, focussing on improving innovation.
5. Securing new forms of finance for businesses and infrastructure projects.
6. Developing a Digital Hub to get the best out of existing assets
These six workstreams underpinned the Sheffield City Region’s proposal to form a LEP, which were submitted to Government in 2010 (the proposal is available to download from the background information section of this website).
